Antique Russian Zagorsk Nesting Doll (6) from pre-WWII Period could be a jewel in your collection. It was found in Germany during in the days after the war was over and than made its way to the USA. It is hand carved from wood and painted in peasant fashion design characteristic for Zagorsk type Nesting Dolls. This design usually should have such features as: dark red scarf, Sarafan with straps, long sleeved blouse and an apron with simple dot shaped flowers.
Zagorsk Matreshka is always drawn with arms, one up and the other at her side. Our Nesting doll has all this features and is an embodiment of simplicity, honesty and charm.
It was originally a seven doll set but in a long run the smallest doll happen to be missed. We can consider it to be in a good condition for its age. Of course it was hard to get through the war without wounds. There are 2 small chips to the front base of the doll, missed paint, some discoloration due to smoke and time. Some inside Dolls have places where the paint is missing.
If its needed I can provide more detailed pictures. The outside doll measures 5.5 tall, next- 4, the 3-d - 2.5, the 4th - 1.5, the 5th - 1, the 6th - 1/2 tall. The nesting is marked underfoot: Made in Soviet Union and a stamp in German.
