VINTAGE RUSSIAN MATRYOSHKA SET OF 9 NESTING DOLLS. ST GEORGE & DRAGON ON MOTHER DOLL. AND THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICONS. HERITAGE QUALITY PAINTING WITH GOLD LEAF.

THE ARTIST ON REVERSE OF LARGEST FIGURE. THIS I ACQUIRED IN THE MID N1990'S FROM A DEALER. IN RUSSIAN SURPLUS AND ART AT A SHOW IN LAS VEGAS.

THESE WERE OF ARTISTICALLY EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY AND PAINTED OF THE ICONS OF SAINT MARY. BUT THEN FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT KNOW ME, MY NAME BEING. GEORGE, THE SAINT GEORGE AND THE DRAGON THEME HAS HELD SPECIAL MEANING TO ME, EVER SINCE A VETERAN OF NOVEMBER 1918 GAVE ME A 1951 (YEAR OF MY BIRTH) SILVER CROWN COIN FEATURING ST GEORGE AND THE DRAGON, AND ST GEORGE HAS COME TO ME EVER SINCE THAT TIME. CONDITION IS EXCELLENT WITH MINOR CRAZING TO THE PAINT AND SMALL CHIPPING AROUND THE RIM OF THE MOTHER DOLL, THEN DOLL NUMBER 3 OF THE CHRIST HAS A LOSS IN THE UPPER CORNER, LEFT OF HIS HEAD. THE OTHERS ARE SPECTACULAR, RICHLY PAINTED WITH GOLD, AND THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CROSS ON THE REVERSE OF EACH FIGURE. THE MOTHER DOLL IS 24 CM TALL AND 11 CM IN DIAMETER.
