10.5 Vintage Signed Russian Folk Tale Nesting Doll Matryoshka, 10 Sisters E729

  

TALL VINTAGE SIGNED RUSSIAN FOLK TALE NESTING DOLL : 10 SISTER DOLLS 10.5. Grandma passed this lovely folk art down to us about 24 years ago and being she did not travel, it was acquired in the US before that. The size of the largest doll--about 11 inches--makes this a unique set.

Online research indicates the subject matter relates to Russian folks tales including a house with chicken legs, a swan princess, and the witch Baba Yaga. The base is signed (according to Google Translate) as Lysenko O. Ryazan; Ryazan is a city in Central Russia.

The internal dolls, which have been protected by nesting in their sisters, are in fine shape, while the largest doll has a small dent along the black base, what appear to be a few bristles from when the varnish was initially applied, a few small chips around the seam, and some small marks where the finish was scuffed--none of these detract from the beauty of the piece as noted in the photos.
