Extremely rare set of Russian hand-painted nesting dolls. Featuring Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls, this expanded set of 10 pieces is seldom seen. Only one sale of an 8-piece, nothing larger, in three years. 5-piece sets are the norm; they are quite numerous and vary greatly in appearance and quality of the likenesses of players. The quality of the construction and hand-painting is excellent on this set.
For all of the wild do's Dennis Rodman wore over the years, don't know if he ever had the Bulls' logo emblazoned on, but the artist took the liberty of adding this extra touch. This is the 1996 - 1998 core lineup, winners of three consecutive NBA titles. The lineup, from largest to smallest, is.Steve Kerr - future HOF (as Coach). Phil Jackson - HOF Coach.
Jordan is approximately 10 inches high. The pieces range down in size to Phil Jackson, slightly less than an inch and a solid piece, not hollow like the rest. The fit and finish are very nice. No looseness at all when assembled.
The fit is tight but not so tight that they cannot be opened, and a mild twist is all it takes to line up the letters or numbers front and back. The interior pieces were likely never displayed.
Jordan's base is slightly convex on the bottom and it rocks slightly, but is stable when standing. The Jackson piece, because of its tiny size, has a slightly-rounded base and does not stand up. The only notable error is the Bill Wennington doll, misspelled'Wannington'. The Jordan doll is hand-signed on the bottom by'Orekhov' and hand-marked'Made In Russia'. When might you see another like this?
