RUSSIAN BABUSHKA VINTAGE FOLK ART. GRADUATED, HAND PAINTED NESTING DOLLS OF. Mid-20th c Russian Babushka wooden dolls. Queen's Guard, Artist Beatnick, Cricket player, Businessman, Policeman.
Offered for sale and your consideration is this wonderful set of most likely late 1950's to mid-1960's Russian (Soviet) hand painted, graduated nesting wooden nesting dolls of British gentlemen in various occupational roles and accompanying costumes. There's some very minor enamel paint flaking on a few of the figures. None of the dolls suffer fractures or noticeable abrasions that obscure their viewing or significantly depreciate their value.
Other than this minor condition issue, the five (5) graduated wooden Babushka dolls are in well-preserved condition. What's unusual about this set of Babushka dolls is their subject. They're a nesting set of 5 British, rather than Russian figures and the various occupational roles and cultural perceptions of the British by foreigners (in this case Russians) is on full display. The largest doll is a British soldier employed in the Queen's Royal Guard. The others are an artist, cricket player, banker & copper. From 6"- 1 ¾" in Height (Tallest to smallest). From 3"- ¾" in Width. Good to Very Good overall vintage condition.
